Upma is one common breakfast in South India. It is prepared with sooji or semolina. Upma served with coconut chutney , MeduVadai along with a filter Coffee is a pure bliss in the morning.
Several variations can be made in the rava upma as Tomato upma, Kichadi, Khara bath and many more however the most common and quick version is the Rava Upma. Now let’s see how to prepare rava upma.
How to make Rava Upma
In a pan dry roast the Rava/sooji until you get a nice aroma make sure not to burn or change the colour of rava. Roast in a low flame and then remove it from the pan and set aside.
In another pan heat oil let it heat up add Mustard Seeds ,Urad Dal and Channa Dal. Next add cashew nuts Green chilli and Curry Leaves.
Saute for a min and then add in chopped onions saute till glossy and then add in the measured water. Add salt and bring it to a rolling boil.
Now add the roasted rava and mix well.
Keep cooking till the rava is completely cooked it will be done in less than 5 mins. Finally add the grated coconut and mix well.
Serve hot with coconut Chutney or Sugar

Rava Upma
Standard 1 cup measures 240 ml
Ingredients
- 1 cup Rava / Sooji
- 1 Onion
- 1.5 cups Water
- Salt as needed
- 2 tbsp Grated Coconut optional
To Temper:
