Urulaikizhangu Puttu is an easy and tasty Side dish prepared with the most favourite and commonly used vegetable. Aloo tastes great when cooked in the right way, this Aloo puttu is one common dish in my kitchen.
I usually pair it with Keerai Masaiyal(will share the recipe soon) and Steamed Rice. The Spicy and tasty Puttu goes very well with the combo. Now let’s get started.
How to make Potato Puttu
1. Chop the Potato pieces and Pressure cook for 3 whistles or until fully cooked .Once the pressure in the cooker completely gets release peel the skin of the chopped Aloo and mash it and set aside. Heat a pan and add in oil once it heats up add in the ingredients under To Temper table one by one.
2. Now add in the chopped onions and sauté until glossy. Then add in Turmeric power and Salt mix well and then add in Ginger garlic paste and cook until the raw smell leaves.
3. Next add in Garam Masala and cumin/Jeera Powder and mix well, finally add in the mashed potato and stir well. Allow it to cook in low flame for 5 mins until everything is well combined and the masala is fully combined with the potato. Finally add in chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame.

Potato Puttu
Standard 1 cup measures 240 ml
Ingredients
- 3 Potato / Aloo
- 1 Onion
- 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic paste
- ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
- ½ tsp Garam Masala
- ½ tsp Cumin powder
- Salt as needed
To Temper:
- 1 tbsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 1 tsp Urad Dal
- Hing/Asafoetida a generous pinch
- 2 Dry Red Chilli
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves
Instructions
- Chop the Potato pieces and Pressure cook for 3 whistles or until fully cooked. Once the pressure in the cooker subsides. Open the cooker and peel the skin of the Aloo. Peel the skin , chop and mash it and set aside.
- Heat a pan and add oil once it heats up add in the ingredients under To Temper table one by one.
- Now add in the chopped onions and sauté until glossy. Then add in Turmeric power and Salt mix well and then add in Ginger garlic paste and cook until the raw smell leaves.
- Next add in Garam Masala and cumin/Jeera Powder and mix well.
- Finally add mashed potato and combine everything.
- Allow it to cook in low flame for 5 mins until everything is well combined and the masala is fully combined with the potato
- Finally add in chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
Notes
- Tastes good with Steamed Rice and Keerai Masiyal or Sambar.
- Grated coconut can also be added to enhance the taste.
